Vanaf 22 maart organiseerde het Conservatorium van Amsterdam samen met de Keep an Eye Foundation voor de vierde keer de Keep An Eye International Jazz Award 2012.

A competition for outstanding young musicians from the Manhattan School of Music NY, Temple University Philadelphia, New England Conservatory Boston & the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. North by North East winner of Keep an Eye international jazz award 2012.

Three bands from US conservatories and three CvA bands competed on April 1st in the final to a packed Bimhuis. North by North East - formed by CvA students Toms Rudzinskis, alto sax, Matiss Cudars, guitar, Joel Illerhag, double bass, Kaspars Kurdeko, drums - won the Keep an Eye International Jazz Award, an amount of € 2500,-. First runner up was MSM Jazz Quartet from the Manhattan School of Music, New York, they won € 1000,-. Drummer Jake Goldbas (MSM Jazz Quartet (New York)) won the ‘Best American Musician’ prize: participation in the Summer Jazz Workshop at the CvA, July CvA 2012. Pianist Liya Grigorian (Soso Lakatos Quartet (CvA) won the ‘Best Amsterdam Musician’ prize: participation in the Hudson Jazz Workshop in New York, August 2012.The ‘Best Composition’ prize of € 500,- was awarded to Sandor Lakatos (Soso Lakatos Quartet, CvA).

The three US bands participating in the international final were: Couples Therapy (New England Conservatory, Boston). Michael Sachs, soprano saxophone. Andrew Halchak, alto saxophone. Ehud Ettun, double bass. Jun Young Song, drums. MSM Jazz Quartet (Manhattan School of Music, New York). Patrick Bartley, alto saxophone. Angelo di Loretti, piano. Jeff Koch, double bass. Jake Goldbas, drums. Temple University Jazz Quartet (Temple University, Philadelphia). Danny Janklow, alto saxophone. Tim Brey, piano. Joe Plowman, double bass. Carl Moritz, drums.

The CvA bands to reach the final were: North by Northeast. Toms Rudzinskis, alto sax, Matiss Cudars, guitar. Joel Illerhag, double bass. Kaspars Kurdeko, drums. Dominic J.Marshall Trio. Dominic J. Marshall, piano. Pat Cleaver, double bass. Kristijan Krajncan, drums. Soso Lakatos Quartet. 'Soso' Sandor Lakatos, alto sax. Liya Grigoryan, piano. Ties Laarakker, double bass. Stefan Fransen, drums.
